The Give A Kid A Coat program has collected 9,879 coats during the first two weeks of the 2009 campaign, which is roughly 15% higher than week two of the 2008 campaign. And while donations are up, so is demand.
Captain Tony Perez with the High Point Salvation Army said they gave out approximately 90% of what they had in stock during the first week of distribution. "Folks that come in are so thankful and appreciative," said Perez, "but we've given almost everything out. We're down to barebones, and we have a great need for children's coats."
"It never ceases to amaze me how the people of the Piedmont Triad come to bat annually and be so giving of themselves," said Jack Murphy of 1075KZL's Murphy in the Morning Show. "This year's campaign still has the potential to be one of the biggest years yet. We have yet to see the coldest air of the season, and we still have work to do, but I am confident that no child or adult will be cold this winter."
To make a donation, simply drop off your outgrown coats or coats no longer being worn to any A Cleaner World location. A Cleaner World will clean and repair the coats and give them to The Salvation Army to distribute. To receive coats, parents only need to verify the number of children in their family and provide basic name and address information. Distribution has already begun, and distribution times and locations vary by city, so contact your local Salvation Army for specific information.
Give A Kid A Coat is sponsored by A Cleaner World, Fox 8/WGHP, 1075KZL, and The Salvation Army. This year's campaign ends on Saturday, November 28th. For additional information, contact Barbara Mitchell at 336-841-4188.
