The 2008 Give A Kid A Coat campaign kicked off today with WGHP/Fox8 and 1075KZL holding a live remote at the A Cleaner World located at 1949 Battleground Avenue in Greensboro. The event was filled with visits by radio and television personalities, music by Evan Olsen, entertainment from the Appalachian Pride Cloggers and the UNCG Cheerleaders, and food provided by Panera Bread, Hardee’s, and Dewey’s Bakery. The highlight of the kick off was a Sarah Palin lookalike contest. The winner was Kelly Wainscott from the Greensboro Montessori School. One thousand dollars will be donated to that school’s PTA. In all, 695 coats were collected during the kickoff.
The Piedmont area Give A Kid A Coat campaign collected, cleaned, and distributed, through The Salvation Army, 28,429 coats in 2007 and has collected, cleaned, and distributed 588,111 coats since the campaign’s inception in 1987. The 2008 campaign began today and will end on Saturday, November 29, 2008.
Residents wishing to participate in this year’s campaign can bring their outgrown coats or coats no longer being worn to any A Cleaner World location. Coats will be cleaned, repaired, and distributed to The Salvation Army for distribution to needy children and adults. Distribution will begin in early November, and more details will be provided at that time.
WGHP/Fox8’s Chief Meteorologist Van Denton urges everyone to check their closets. “Not that I go by it,” said Denton, “but the Old Farmer’s Almanac is calling for a ‘Cold and Snowy’ winter. Please help keep those in need warm this winter by donating a coat to Give A Kid A Coat.”
Give A Kid A Coat is sponsored by A Cleaner World, WGHP/Fox8, 1075ZKL, and The Salvation Army. For additional information, please call Barbara Mitchell at 336-841-4188.
