How to Remove Pet Odor from Rugs

If you're training a new pet or have a pet that is accident prone, here are a few tips for removing the odor. This is a "must" to prevent your pet from returning to the same area to repeatedly have accidents.

  1. Soak up as much of the urine as possible before it dries using paper towels, newspaper, or an absorbent cloth that you can launder afterward. If this is an area or room-sized rug, you'll want to get the paper/cloth under the floor covering as well to absorb urine both top and bottom. Walk (jump up and down) on top of the paper/cloth to help absorb the urine.
  2. Rinse the accident zone with cool water preferably using a rug cleaner, wet vac, or vacuum extractor. Don't use hot water or steam otherwise the heat will "set" the stain in the soiled area. Let the rug dry thoroughly before you allow foot traffic to resume.
  3. Be sure to use a potent pet odor neutralizer from the pet store to remove all traces of any lingering odor.
  4. Avoid harsh chemical detergents, vinegar, or ammonia to shampoo your rug as these strong odors can encourage your pet to repeat his behavior.
